AbstractFor surplus electric power control of spacecrafts, shunt methods are mainly employed. The shunt method is classified into following three types: an analog, a digital, and a digital-analog shunt method. For large-scaled applications satellites, the digital shunt method is often used. In this method, the high frequency noise is mandatorily generated by repeatedly turning shunt switch on and off for control of the bus voltage. On the other hand, for scientific satellites, low noise characteristics are required for various science missions. Accordingly, the scientific satellites mainly employ the analog or digital-analog shunt method for the bus voltage control. However, these shunt methods have the disadvantage of heat generation by linearly controlling voltage due to using transistor's characteristic. It is difficult to apply the analog shunt to satellites with large-scaled electric power. Therefore, low noise and low heat generation are very important. This paper proposes a new shunt method with which heat generation is suppressed by using the digital shunt and which achieves low noise because the operation of the shunt switch is suppressed by using the constant voltage part of I-V curve of solar arrays. And charge arrays method is adopted in charging battery due to generating no high frequency noise and no heat generation. This paper reports the results of operation tests for the power system that combines the new shunt method with the charge arrays method.
