AbstractFHI has developed a new capacitor which employs a Li-doping carbon material as an anode. "Lithium Ion Capacitor (LIC) " should be further characterized by "pre-doping" of the anode with Li ion. The pre-doped anode dramatically increases energy density of LIC, much larger than that of an electric double layer capacitor (EDLC), without compromising excellent characteristics of EDLC such as high power density and good cyclability. In addition, in spite of a high output voltage up to 4.2 V, reliability of LIC exceeds that of EDLC at an elevated temperature. LIC, the components of which are not expensive and are compatible with conventional mass production systems, is promising as an alternative for not only EDLC but also lithium ion batteries and acid-lead batteries. World wide application of LIC to HEV is highly expected.
