AbstractThe concept of space agriculture is developed to support manned exploration on a distant planet Mars. Three core items of our innovative life support system are hyper-thermophilic aerobic composting bacterial ecology, cultivation of trees for producing excess oxygen, and entomophagy. This proposal is well matured based on our cultural and historical background. Candidate insect species for supplying animal proteins are discussed together with tree species for those insects. A potential problem of sodium circulation in space agriculture is described here, and several schemes of sodium processing are addressed.
