AbstractSolar Power Satellite (SPS) which has been received a considerable public concern by the efficient utilization of the sunlight remains many issues which should be studied. Construction of a large scale solar panel and a transmitting antenna is one of the important subject toward SPS. I carried out the experimental study on the deployment and flatness maintaining a large-sized antenna for the SPS. The wireless microwave power transmission method is used for the SPS system. The high reliable development of the antenna panel and the flatness maintaining control are required in order to achieve high efficiency power transmission. I carried out two experiments concerning a smart actuator system. One is the 2-D deployment experiment using 32 panels with a remote radio control system and the other is the flatness control experiment using four panels. I confirmed that the portion of the operation and deployment speed can be controlled by the smart actuator system. Also, I evaluated an application of our deployment system for the space demonstration experiment of SPS using the small scientific satellite. I compared our smart actuator with the conventional actuators and summarized the advantages of our actuator using SMA.
