AbstractThe SPS has a long history of over 40 years after the first proposal by P. E. Glaser. We have many kinds of SPS design and experiments for the SPS during the 40 years. In 60's and 70's, Dr. W. C. Brown carried out the first microwave power transmission (MPT) experiment in the world and also carried out the biggest MPT experiment of 450kW power, 1.6km distance. In 80's and 90's, Prof. Matsumoto of Kyoto University carried out the first MPT rocket experiment and some MPT experiments with phased array. In '00, Prof. Kaya of Kobe University carried out 150km MPT demonstration. All kinds of MPT experiment seem to be carried out, however, the SPS project have not been started yet.In 2009 in Japan, 'Basic Plan for Space Policy' was published, on which 'As a program that corresponds to the following major social needs and goals for the next 10 years, a Space Solar Power Program will be targeted for the promotion of the 5-year development and utilization plan.' We need both technical advance and 'surprise' in the next space experiment based on the Basic Plan for Space Policy. I propose the MPT space experiment with 24GHz. The 24GHz microwave has merits and demerits as follows ;Merit 1) We can decrease the antenna size of the MPT, which is 1/10 smaller of Tx x Rx antenna than that with 2.45GHz, 2) It is in ISM band and there is few users.Demerit 1) Efficiency and power are lower that that with 2.45GHz, 2) Absorption in the air is larger, 3) Technical hurdle is higher. However, we can transmit the microwave power from 400 km above to the ground with considerable experimental parameters with higher beam collection efficiency. Therefore, the 24GHz space experiment will be realized with both technical advance and 'surprise'. For the 24GHz experiment, we have developed 24GHz rectenna with 30.2% efficiency in Kyoto University.
