An ion beam originating from an ion thruster causes charge exchange collisions (CEX) with neighboring neutral particles and results in Energetic Neutral Atoms (ENAs). We can estimate the density of the neutral particles in the upper atmosphere by analyzing these ENAs. To investigate this new ENA particle detection method, we started fundamental experiments of how to detect ENAs by using an Avalanche Photodiode (APD). In these experiments we investigated the characteristics of APDs as ENA detectors. We obtain results that confirm APDs to be good ENA detectors in terms of resolution compared to a quartz crystal measurement. Also, we estimated the amount of ENAs which can be detected in a demonstration experiment using a sounding rocket and showed that APDs are feasible detectors for ENA detection. Additionally, we investigated the dependence of the APD\u0027s gain with respect to the energy and the species of the ENAs.
