AbstractRecent experimental studies on flat plate turbulent boundary layer and turbulent pipe flow show that the results contradict the classical view of a Reynolds number independent logarithmic overlap region. This poses serious problems directly related to our understanding of the structure and scaling of wall-bounded flows. We take up one of such problems, namely, a re-examination of the velocity profile for the whole layer. We need such a type for the velocity profile that can describe the effect of the Reynolds number. And we here focus on the Reichardt-Finley composite velocity profile and show that it well represents the velocity profile of turbulent pipe flow. Indeed we can determine the constants kappa and B of the logarithmic profile from the velocity data by optimizing the profile fitting.
