AbstractRecently, an increase in the electric power demand and global warming caused by carbon dioxide become problems. A Space Solar Power System (SSPS) is researched to solve these problems. SSPS is a system supplying electricity generated by sunlight to the ground via microwave. The SSPS launched into a geostationary orbit consists of an electric power generation part and a transmission part supplying electricity to the ground. High voltage such as 10 kV will be applied on the power cable to decrease the electricity losses due to joule heating. Moreover, because the electric power cable is exposed directly to the space environment, the cable surface suffers from heat cycles, ultraviolet rays, and so on. A virgin sample and a heated sample of Spec55 (power cable for space) were experimented with high applied voltage. A high voltage was applied to the power cable on grounded electrode to simulate the cable wired on the body surface of satellite. In the experiments, it was confirmed that a discharge occurred between the cable surface and the grounded electrode. When an initial discharge occurred, the cable surface was charged by the electrons emitted from the grounded electrode. On a high voltage was turned off, a discharge occurred at the cable surface. The charged surface was neutralized by this discharge. In the case of the vinyl insulation electric wire of low insulation rating, a multiple electric discharge occurred during high voltage was applied. The heat degradation cable of Spec55 had an initial discharge occurred during high voltage was applied. The heat degradation cable of Spec55 had an initial discharge with high applied voltage. To examine the influence on power cable coating of the initial discharge repetition caused by On and Off of the power generation in SSPS, it is necessary to generate many initial discharges with power cable repeatedly. The insulation characteristics of the power cable coating by measuring a coating resistance value by repetitive discharge experiment will be examined for future work.
