AbstractThe Water-Energy-Cycle Space Propulsion System is a multifunctional system that stores electric energy and provides thermal energy and propulsion. We researched the design method of applying the water-energy-cycle system to the automatic construction machinery. As the automatic construction machinery carries materials repeatedly, its motors repeat accelerating and decelerating over and over. Consequently recovering and reusing the kinetic energy will be very effective. To move motors by the fuel cells has been already developed in automotive engineering, and hybrid vehicles can recover kinetic energy into batteries. On the other hand, we examined another way to reuse energy, that uses electrolyzer and motor-generator to recover kinetic energy. We have built the design method for applying the Water-Energy-Cycle Space Propulsion System to automatic construction machinery. It is as follows. (1) Decide the solar cells size and specifications from motor power. (2) Decide the electrolyzer specifications to generate the maximum solar cells power. (3) Decide the fuel cells specifications to generate the maximum power to drive the motors. (4) For energy recovering, if necessary, set a step-up converter between the motor and the electrolyzer.
