It rendezvoused with the asteroid Itokawa after the deep space flight in two years with a delta-V of 1,400 m/s, 22 kg of xenon propellant consumption and 25,800 hour \u0026 unit of the total accumulated operational time of the ion engines. Though it succeeded in landing on the asteroid on November 2005, the spacecraft was seriously damaged. It delayed the Earth return in 2010 from the original plan in 2007. Reconstruction on the operational scheme using remaining functions and newly uploaded control logic made the Hayabusa leave for Earth in April 2007. By October 2009, coupling voltages of neutralizers B and D reached power supply\u0027s upper limit and plasma ignition of the ion source A turned out to be impossible due to some failure of microwave feeders. Combination of the ion source B and the neutralizer A successfully generated a thrust larger than 5 mN. Slightly degraded neutralizer C could still tolerate operation at a thrust of 5 mN. By using the \"A+B\" and C thrusters, cruise operation had been performed until 27 March 2010.
