AbstractWith the advance of development of space utilization, the size and electric capacity of a spacecraft have become larger. So it is necessary to generate and transmit the electric power with higher voltage. Power wires transmitting the electricity are occasionally installed outside the body and/or the solar array paddles of the spacecraft, which are possible to be damaged by impacts of space debris and/or heat cycles. Then the conductors of the wires are exposed to space.In space, the spacecraft is charged by space plasma, and a surface flashover may occur. When the surface flashover happens near the conductor of the power wires, the arcing discharge is possible to occur because of discharge plasma generated by the surface flashover. The occurrence of this discharge causes malfunctions or damages to the spacecraft.From this viewpoint, we carried out experiments for the sustained arcing discharges between wires triggered by surface flashover on a thermal control material, silvered Teflon FEP, due to electron beam irradiation. A pair of wires with partially lacked ETFE insulator laid on the FEP film with 125microm thickness was irradiated by electron beam with the energy smaller than 20keV in a vacuum chamber. As a resistor R was inserted between two wires, potential difference R・I was formed between the two wires by flowing current I from a current source. At the time of the surface flashover, arcing discharge occurred between the conductors of the wires. For example, the arcing sustained for about 26micros in the case of the wire current I=0.5A and the potential difference RI=121V.We obtained the result that the arcing time is dependent on the potential of FEP surface, the potential difference RI and wire current I. As the potential difference RI gets larger or the wire current I smaller, the arcing time becomes longer.
