AbstractNowadays, Solar Power Station is expected to solve energy problems. Therefore an experiment to demonstrate wireless energy transfer technology is planned in Japan. In the experiment, a satellite in low orbit of 370 km in space transfers energy to receiving antennas on the Earth by microwave of 5.8 GHz. In this study, we evaluated transmitting antennas for the demonstrate experiment by computer experiments. We initialized that phased array antenna is composed of 1024 elements and their element spacing is 0.75 lambda, where lambda is the wavelength in free space and control bits of phase shifter is 5 bits. Then we calculated the antenna pattern with changing the following parameters : the number of elements, element spacing, and control bits of phase shifters. To optimize transmitting antennas for the experiment, we computed the received power and the maximum beam direction errors between the desired beam direction and actual beam direction. We revealed that the beam direction errors were in inverse proportion to both the number of antennas and the element spacing ; when we increased the control bits by 1, the beam direction error became half. It was also revealed that sub array antenna configuration did not affect the beam direction errors. We showed that when we use phased array antenna with a diameter of 1.9 meters, the maximum beam direction error was 0.05 degrees, which is equivalent to 323 meters long in the horizontal direction on the Earth. A practical experiment was conducted by using Advanced Phased Array System for Microwave Power Transmission, where the distance between the transmitting and receiving antenna is 6.441 meters, in order to measure antenna pattern of transmitting antenna and to compare the computation results.
