To reveal the effects of the space environment on the non-host genome, we used a safety virus model system, budding yeast Ty1, which is closely similar to human retroviruses. We found that DNA damage that is supposed to be caused in Space increases the activation of the virus amplifications, and these effects are suppressed by host DNA damage repair proteins, such as Mre11.
