AbstractThe MagnetoPlasmaSail (MPS) is a new concept of low-thrust space propulsion system, in which the initial magnetic field is inflated by plasma injection from the spacecraft to capture the kinetic momentum of the solar wind plasma. One of the keys to actualize the MPS system is to convert efficiently the kinetic momentum of the rarefied plasma flow into the propulsive force. In this report, interaction between the rarefied plasma and the magnetic field is studied to understand the acceleration process of the MPS. The results show that the electric current induced by the initial magnetic field generates the magnetic field which acts on the magnetic dipole to propel the spacecraft in the streamwise direction. The acceleration mechanism of the magnetic sail system is briefly discussed.
