AbstractWe showed a proposal that space solar power can be converted to pulse laser directly to realize a space transfer system based on laser propulsion. Nd/Cr:YAG (Yttrium Aluminum Garnet) ceramics material pumped by an arc-metal-halide lamp and solar power was stored in the laser material once. Laser pulses generated in a flash lamp-pumped Nd/Cr:YAG ceramic rod laser oscillator were amplified so that a spatial mode of laser output has been improved to square Gaussian mode. The saturated amplification of output laser energy was observed at 40 mJ/sq cm in output fluence when the profile of input laser profile was 9 x 9 sq mm. The pulse durations were 62 ns and 160 microsecond. Maximum output energy was 340 mJ in the case of 160 microsecond pulse duration. The maximum reputation of laser pulse was 10 Hz in these experiments. Abrasions of carbon and aluminum were observed by focusing laser pulses. Laser parameters were shown to realize laser propulsion system in the future. Applications of the solar-pumped pulse lasers are such as removal of space debris, manufacturing process, extractive metallurgy, chemical and biological applications. Generating more short pulses will open broad applications.
