AbstractAcoustic flight tests with the MuPAL-alpha Research Airplane have been conducted by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). JAXA has been carrying out a research program aimed at developing noise abatement flight procedures using three-dimensional flight paths. As part of the effort to predict noise impact on the ground precisely, straight flight patterns including level, climbing, and descending flights were flown to obtain basic noise data for the development and verification of noise models. Turning flights were also flown to acquire noise data that will be necessary in designing three-dimensional curved flight paths that minimize noise impact on the ground. Variations of A-weighted noise levels due to changes in airspeed and engine torque were examined in this study. Moreover, directivity patterns, displayed as noise levels at a constant distance from the airplane, were estimated by calculating the direction of noise emission and the influence of airplane position and attitude.
