AbstractLasers have been a candidate for the power medium of Space Solar Power System (SSPS) for thirty years since Glazer's proposal in 1968. However serious consideration on laser usage began only recently due to the advent of highly efficient laser systems such as laser diode pumped scheme. JAXA initiated a research committee investigating the feasibility of the use of laser as a power source and beaming medium. Among the propositions resulting from the committee is the use of solar pumped laser system that directly utilizes broadband solar spectrum for pumping laser action in solid state media. This scheme will eliminate conversion of photon energy into electrical power and simplify the SSPS system. It can also increase the efficiency of the system. In addition to these benefits, significant reduction of the total mass of the on-orbit power station as well as the size of ground power receiver compared to microwave schemes advantage the development of the Laser SSPS. In this paper, brief description for the components and an element that characterize the Laser SSPS is given. They include solar power concentrator, solar pumped laser, beam pointing system and laser beam propagation in atmosphere. Based on these components, a model of Laser SSPS (2003 model) is presented.
