AbstractNavier-Stokes simulations are carried out for the investigation of a body-flap effect on the subsonic to supersonic base-entry aerodynamic characteristics for the conical SSTO-rocket configuration. It is clarified that the body-flap effect has strong dependence on the angle of attack and Mach number. The body-flap effect is small at subsonic and transonic conditions. At the subsonic and transonic conditions, the windside pressure level over the body-flap is not so high as compared to the leeside due to the influence of the flow which is accelerated over the base surface. It is also clarified that the pressure level behind the body-flap does not become lower than that in the recirculating flow behind the body in all the subsonic to supersonic conditions.
