AbstractThis review provides a summary of spectroscopic diagnostics in the mid- and far-infrared which are relevant for the study of galaxy evolution with SPICA. It starts with a description of (some of) the contemporary subjects that have to be addressed for a comprehensive study of this topic. Subsequently, relevant tools are introduced and their application demonstrated with previous results. This review does not aim at being complete in any sense, but is meant as an introduction to the galaxy evolution part of these proceedings, and wants to highlight the tremendous potential for future progress in this area with SPICA, in particular with its mid-and far-infrared spectrometers MCS and SAFARI.
