A feature of this apparatus is the completely automatic recording system which is achieved by means of the electric driving and detecting units. In place of a torsion wire a torque motor is attached to the inner cylinder and the deflection of inner cylinder is measured by a special electro-magnetic detector. A specially constructed alternating current generator is used for giving the oscillatory torque of very low frequencies below 1 c./sec. to the inner cylinder. The stiffness of inner cylinder to deflection and the amplitude of torque acting on the inner cylinder can be varied continuously by use of the torque motor. This instrument has been used for studying a great variety of viscoelastic materials. Some results on polyisobutylene, on linseed oil and on a thixotropic suspension of barium sulfate in polyisobutylene are illustrated. A feature of this apparatus is the completely automatic recording system which is achieved by means of the electric driving and detecting units.
