内容記述 | Recent years have seen a renewed interest in workplace democracy as a way democratically to control economic production for the benefit of workers and communities. This paper links the empirical practice of workplace democracy with recent debates in political theory to draw out theoretical and practical implications for future research. For this purpose, the paper focuses on the case of worker cooperatives as a real-world example of workplace democracy. It then critically reviews the following arguments for justifying workplace democracy: developing democratic citizens, firm-state analogy, liberal neutrality, and preventing arbitrary interference. I draw out two main implications for future research. First, the justification of workplace democracy cannot be divorced from the question of how democratic workplaces interact with their external environment in ways that promote people’s equal relations, not only within the workplace, but also as citizens beyond it. Thus, a theory of workplace democracy must situate democratic firms within their wider institutional context. Second, the institutional context within which firms operate is subject to demands of democratic legitimacy and accountability. Thus, an institutional context that incorporates democratic firms must be achieved democratically. As a subject for future research, I suggest that worker cooperatives can be seen as political actors engaging in democratic practices for structural change. |
