Plan of computing facility for RHIC Spin Project

Abstract

It is indicated in this paper that one of the biggest remaining issues for the RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) Spin Project is the method and facility to treat data from the experimental setup. PHENIX (a major detector of RHIC) is designed to produce 20 Mbytes/s of data. Three experimental detectors in RHIC project other than PHENIX have the same problem. The total amount of whole RHIC's data was estimated to be more than 1,500 Tbytes in a year. The necessary numbers of workstations, fixed disks, tapes, and so forth were also estimated. The key issues were indicated and discussed to be a development of technology to operate efficiently such a big computing facility, and a method of data transfer between U.S. and Japan.

本論文では相対論的重イオン衝突加速器(RHIC)スピンプロジェクトに残された最大の課題のひとつは、実験装置からのデータ処理方法と設備であることを指摘した。PHENIX(RHICの主要検出器)は20Mバイト/sのデータを発生する設計である。PHENIX以外のRHICプロジェクトの3基の実験検出器も同じ問題を抱えている。全RHICデータの年間総量は1,500Tバイト以上になると推定した。ワークステーション、固定ディスク、テープその他の必要数量を推定した。重要課題は巨大な計算設備を効率よく運転する技術の開発と日米間のデータ転送方法であることを指摘し論じた。
