The concentration of preformed nutrients in the model presented reflects the concentration of nitrogen at depth, the efficiency with which nitrogen is supplied to the cold surface water by exchange with the intermediate layer, the extent to which nutrients in the cold surface regime are diluted by low nutrient water from lower latitude, and the efficiency with which nutrients are used up by the local cold water biota. |
