グローバルテストベッド(GEMnet)を利用した実験状況:実験用グローバルネトワーク(GEMnet)の現状と方向性

Abstract

NTT has been operating its network for experiments called GEMnet (Global Enhanced Multifunctional Network) for the research and development of global information-sharing services and to verify them on a real network. This paper describes the current network configuration of GEMnet, experiments using it, and its future direction as a review paper for this issue's feature topic, 'Experiments using GEMnet.' In Japan, GEMnet connects three of NTT's research and development centers. Globally, it connects NTT Musashino research and development center to NTT America's San Jose facilities with a 33-Mbit/s ATM link and to NTT MSC's research and development center in Malaysia with a 1.5-Mbit/s ATM link. In June 2001, GEMnet was connected to Abilene, which is the backbone network of Internet 2. This has enabled joint experiments using Abilene. Use of GEMnet in global services creation will be promoted while strengthening ties with other research and education networks and examining the experiment topics.

NTTは、1998年度より、グローバルな情報流通サービスの研究開発およびその実ネットワーク上での検証をねらいとして、実験用ネットワークGEMnet(Global Enhanced Multifunctional Network)を構築し、これを用いて様々な実験を行ってきた。本論文は、本誌本号の特集「グローバルテストベッド(GEMnet)を利用した実験状況」の総括論文とし、現状におけるGEMnetのネットワーク構成および利用状況を述べるとともに、今後の方向性について述べる。GEMnetは、日本国内ではNTTの研究開発拠点3カ所を結び、海外とは、NTT武蔵野研究開発センタとNTTアメリカのサンノゼ拠点問を33Mbit/sのATM専用線で、同センタとマレーシアのNTTMSC研究開発センタ間を1.5Mbit/sの専用線で結んでいる。2001年6月には、GEMnetと米国Internet2のバックボーンネットワークであるAbileneとの接続を完了した。このことにより、Abileneを経由したネットワークを用いる共同実験が可能になった。今後は、実験テーマの見直しと絞り込みを行う一方、Abileneなど他の学術研究用ネットワークとの連携を深めながら、新グローバルサービス実現に向けた研究開発での活用を進める。
