抄録The effects of work on the menses and menstrual cycles of female cabin attendants in the Japan Air Self-Defense Force were investigated, and the following results were obtained. (1) When asked if there had been long-term changes in the menses since the start of work at the present posts, 35.5 percent of the subjects answered yes. Considering the answers to other questions of the questionnaire, adaptation to the work place and human relations were considered to be more important factors than the work itself as a cabin attendant. Forty-seven percent of the subjects experienced changes in the menses-related symptoms when working in the cabin compared to working on the ground. This was considered to be due to physical and mental factors such as fatigue, which are associated with the work as a cabin attendant. (2) The follow-up survey over one year revealed that as many as 58.3 percent of the subjects experienced irregular menstrual cycles. This figure is considerably higher than the average of women (about 15 percent) and that of professional women (13 - 27 percent). Temporary prolongation and reduction of the menstrual cycle were noted in 75 percent of the cabin attendants working during overseas flights, suggesting that standing for a long time and irregular working hours have effects.
